A fare meter is a mechanical or digital tool set up in taxicabs, cars, rickshaws, and autos that determines traveler fares in real-time based on a combination of range traveled as well as waiting time. This application displays the actual fare, duration and distance traveled.

A digital metre in auto rickshaws and taxis usually works by recording the pulse received from the engine's transmission system (it is based on the RPM). To record how much distance the vehicle has traveled the meter takes readings from a sensor.

The mechanical setup connected to the measurement unit count the number of rotations of the wheel. The wheel rotation calculates the RPM and distance travelled by auto, this data will get recorded in a microcontroller and a receipt of appropriate fare is produced.
